This year’s PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) comprised of 33 events, making it the biggest poker tournament series on the internet. Now, in its seventh year, the WCOOP is the most prestigious online poker tournament and is a great launching pad for poker aces to make the leap from online to big offline poker play. The series had a total prize fund of almost $40,000,000.
Players from 119 countries took part with The USA picking up the most bracelets in the series overall. Players from 80 of the 119 countries earned prizes from the events of the series.
Many poker players that compete in the big offline tournaments went online to compete with the best online players as the series attracted over 20,000 players from around the world. Names such as Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier, Christian Harder and Alex Kostritsyn all entered the No Limit Hold’em main event which comprised of 2,143 entrants and ended the series.
However, none of them were able to win the main event which was won by Carter King of the USA under the alias ckingusc. His prize of over $1,265,000 (£682,000) will pay for plenty more buy-ins for poker events.
He defeated a British player calling himself “liberace” in the heads-up with a king and jack of hearts proving superior to liberace’s queen of hearts and 7 of spades in the final hand. For his runners-up spot liberace earned himself $1,375,250 (£741,330).
