The West Yorkshire town of Huddersfield isn’t the obvious venue for a multi million pound land based casino but leading online casino site Casino Red have chosen the market town for it’s latest venture.
The company plans to convert the historic Princess Cinema, which has also taken on the guise of a nightclub and a restaurant since its hey day as the former town centre a picture house, and has employed, a Leeds-based design company, WDL, to draw up the plans.
The new £5 million facility will compete with the Grosvenor Casino which is also in operation in the town of 146,000 people.
The new casino is set to be operational in 12 months time and will house a poker room in the basement, while ground floor will host blackjack, roulette and gaming machines, and the first floor will be home to a mezzanine circle boasting a 85-place restaurant and bar. The top floor has been reserved for a possible VIP section.
The company has also promised that the project will create120 jobs for the local area. Casino Red Chief Executive Nicholas Boyes-Hunter said: ‘We chose Huddersfield out of hundreds of possible towns and cities - but it was an easy decision.’
‘It is a vibrant town with a thriving social scene. We knew, on viewing the old cinema, that we could develop a spectacular site in a tremendous location.
Jonathan Truelove, who will manage the operation, said: "Huddersfield is a prosperous town and is one of the UK's largest boroughs.
"Everyone we have spoken to in the town has been hugely positive.
"We will provide a safe, responsible, friendly and controlled entertainment environment.
"People can dine and enjoy live entertainment without entering gaming areas.
"For customers who enjoy gaming we operate to exacting standards in the world's most highly-regulated and respected gaming industry."
