A gambling nation holds its breath

At about 7 o’clock this evening MPs in the House of Commons will decide whether plans to build Britain’s first Super Casino in Manchester will go ahead.

Also up for vote is the remainder of Casino Advisory Panel’s findings which includes 16 other large scale Casinos nationwide.

More than 100 Mps (including 83 from the Labour Party) have signed a parliamentary motion expressing “surprise and regret” at the recommendations already put forward.

Yesterday Conservative leader David Cameron urged his party members to vote against the proposals the Liberal Democrats are also on record as saying they would not back the controversial plan.

Intriguingly Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said if the plans were rejected there could be “no plan B quickly”.

If the bill passes the House of Commons test this evening then it would go to the House of Lords where it’s expected it could well fail.

Neither MPs nor peers can vote to change the locations so objectors will have to vote against the entire order.

Manchester caused a stir by winning the bid for the Super Casino ahead of frontrunners Blackpool and London’s Dome.

Leading Labour party rebel, Joan Humble, Member of Parliament for Blackpool North and Fleetwood said “It’s always difficult to estimate how much of our concern will translate into either a vote against or abstention.

“The Government should be aware that what we want is an opportunity for Blackpool’s bid to be properly considered. We want fairness in this” she added.

Understandably Tessa Jowell is a worried woman this afternoon. If the vote is in favour of scrapping the advisory panel’s recommendations it will represent an embarrassing climb down by the Government.
