A court in Britain ruled this week that a quarter of a million pounds in casino winnings were won illegally.
A gambling group of three people were found guilty of defrauding some of the top UK casinos in an elaborate scam. The gang, living in London, used small cameras and miniature earpieces to help them win on poker games.
Poker games were monitored by these cameras and footage sent via Bluetooth to a partner in a van outside the casino, who in turn fed the player with information on which hands to bet on. Because of the high numbers of high stake games they had won - the casino security at Mint Casino started paying closer and closer attention to the suspicious group.
After hours of surveillance the casino felt they had enough recorded material to press charges.
All three of the gang pleaded guilty to cheating at play, and one received a nine month sentence and the other two - suspended sentences.
Had the group stuck to smaller pots then it’s likely they would have got away with the scam for much longer but as the wins at casinos across the country got bigger so too did the suspicion that surrounded them.
Casinos world wide are now spending millions annually attempting to spot fraudsters who continue to devise more subtle and high tech equipment to record games.
For this particular group their luck finally came to an end.
