Fair enough the odds on getting arrested in the West African nation are Senegal are probably high but being incarcerated for mooning must have been a tad embarrassing for 19 year old Irish student Patrick Devine.
News filtered through yesterday that the Belfast student is in prison for allegedly showing his rear at the home of a Senegalese governor.
It’s understood Patrick, who was working in Senegal on a teaching programme, is being held in a cell with 40 others.
Irish Government officials in Nigeria are trying to get the Irishman released but are dealing with the situation as delicately as possible.
While incarceration in a Senegalese prison must be extremely difficult for the Irish teenager his situation is even grimmer.
While in Prison he contracted chicken Pox and had part of his small toe amputated due to infection.
Patrick’s family back in Donegal has requested that no more publicity be made from the sad if somewhat bizarre tale and said they will not be talking to the media because of the “sensitiveness of the case.”
A source close to the family said he had been remanded in custody until the end of the month.
It’s not the first time that bearing one’s buttocks has attracted the interest of the authorities in an African nation.
Two Zimbabwean brothers were charged and jailed for indecent exposure in 2006 for wearing traditional African loincloths which leave the buttocks exposed. Whilst not strictly mooning, it illustrates the legal view on mooning in that country.
While the odds of Devine’s run of bad luck would have been massive in the extreme I think you could safely bet that he never goes back to Senegal after he eventually returns to the emerald isle!
