There’s a gambling ‘problem’ in top flight football in England according to veteran West Ham United striker Teddy Sheringham.
The 40 year old former England star believes that young players with plenty of money and plenty of leisure time are most at risk.
Earlier this year it emerged that Newcastle United and England front man Michael Owen had ran up serious losses from gambling. It was also reported that Owen was at least partly responsible for introducing Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney to betting.
Sheringham is a keen poker player himself and believes players must be disciplined by their managers and clubs for the good of their future career.
Meanwhile in Spain former Spurs striker Fredi Kanoute caused a stir at his current club Sevilla when he refused to wear a team jersey with the logo of 888.com on it because he considered it to be a sin.
A devout Muslim, Kanoute taped over the logo during Sevilla’s game against Barcelona in September but afterwards refused to play unless he could wear a jersey without the logo across it. The online gambling company agreed a deal worth £3 million per year deal with the club in August.
Sevilla eventually decided to give in the French man’s demands and so he will play with a logoless jersey for the reminder of the La Liga season.
