Holy smoke in Wales!
By Graham Clifford
Published on 6 April 2007

It’s not easy sitting at a roulette table in Wales these days if you’re a smoker.

The new ban preventing gamblers from sparking up means many are moving to online gaming sites but one Casino chain has come up with a novel way to prevent customers playing from home.

The Grosvenor Casino Atlantic Wharf in Cardiff has launched a menu of richly flavoured food in a bid to help smokers combat those insatiable cravings.

The casino's new menu was devised with the help of a nutritionist and features food rich in nutrition and flavour to help reduce nicotine cravings.

The 'Light-en Up' menu features a spicy lamb and vegetable dish with gogi berries seasoned with asafoetida, a pungent spice also known as devil's dung, which should reinvigorate the tastebuds of the 19 per cent of people who decided to ditch the fags when the ban came in.

Gamblers can enjoy the starter of avocado, roasted red pepper and baby spinach salad safe in the knowledge that its sweet gogi berry dressing will replenish the antioxidants, vitamins and amino acids that having a cigarette drains from the body.

For dessert, diners will get fruits of the forest with blueberry oatcake, rich in antioxidants and nicotine-suppressing qualities.

Jay Pillai, general manager at the casino said: "Following the new legislation, we're committed to making the transition as easy and enjoyable as possible for all of our customers. We're very proud to be the first to launch this delicious new menu to help keep the cravings at bay so that people can still enjoy a great night out with us."

Gamers will also be offered carrot and celery sticks between courses to help people who would usually smoke during meals.

Helena Hall, consultant nutritionist said: "During or after a meal is one of the most popular times for an ex-smoker to crave a cigarette and I'm delighted to have worked with Grosvenor Casinos to create a menu that will help reduce cravings."

While the ambitious plans may have some success it’s still likely that there’ll be a large number of players lighting up outside the casino doors!
