Will the British Olympic team be more successful in London?
Published on 27 August 2008
The British team as a whole have had their best Olympic medal total in the history of the summer games. All in all the British team won a total of 47 medals – with 19 golds, 13 silvers and 15 bronze medals at the Beijing Games. This meant Team GB were in fourth place in the medal table behind only the superpowers of hosts China, the United States and Russia.
In anticipation of the 2012 Olympic Games coming to London, William Hill have already started to offer odds if our Olympians can beat their Beijing medal tally on home soil – just a couple of days after the Olympic action finished in the Chinese capital and four years from the start of the London Olympics.
William Hill have placed the 2012 British team as favourites to do even better than this year’s team in Beijing.
For Team GB to beat their Beijing medal tally William Hill are offering odds of 1/6*. For the team to win less medals at the London Games than they did in Beijing, the odds are 7/2*. For the team to win 50 or more you can get odds of 1/4* with odds of 11/4* that they will win under 50.
In terms of gold medals, for Team GB to exceed their Beijing tally of 19, William Hill are offering odds of 1/2*. For the team to win less – you will currently get odds of 6/4*.
For the team to go one better and finish third in the medal table in London, the odds are 7/4*.
William Hill have announced that more money than ever was wagered on the 2008 Beijing Games than on any other summer Olympics – with £25 million being gambled on the events. For the London Games, William Hill together with Ladbrokes both predict that that figure will be doubled.
William hill took many large bets on the recent Beijing spectacle with £40,000 being the largest placed on a single bet.
William spokesman Graham Sharpe said, “It was easily the biggest betting Olympics ever, with £25 million gambled, and we already predict that over £50 million will be gambled at London 2012.”
