Who will be the next Met Chief and BBC Sports Personality of the year?
By Graham Clifford
Published on 4 December 2008
Yes the two are very different titles but this week you can get excellent odds on whom will be the next head of the Metropolitan Police and who will lift the gong at the BBC Sports Personality of the year award on December 14th.

Perhaps the really adventurous out there will go for a double.

In terms of the Met Chief position Northern Ireland’s Sir Hugh Orde is the 5/2 favourite following reports that Sir Paul Stephenson may have decided against running for the top job at the Met.

The 2nd Chief Constable of the PSNI is now the clear frontrunner with bookmakers while Stephenson, who up until this week was considered the clear favourite at 11/8 for the job, has now slipped in the betting to 4/1.

Other odds are available for Mike Fuller 7/2, Stephen House 7/1, Bernard Hogan-Howe 8/1 and Sir Ronnie Flanagan 10/1 amongst others.

You can also get DCI Jack Meadows from The Bill at 500/1! - Surely conservative odds considering how comical this would be.

Many more will be familiar with the country’s sports stars than the leading law keepers and its no surprise that Formula One Champion Lewis Hamilton at the overwhelming favourite at very low odds of 4/7.

It would be highly unlikely for Hamilton to be beaten it seems though at 10/3 Rebecca Adlington and at 9/2 Chris Hoy both will put up a major fight.

Hamilton was last year’s runner up when Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe took the accolade.

Indeed Calzaghe who remained undefeated in 2008 is available at odds of 66/1 to become the first ever sportsperson to retain the BBC sports personality of the year title.

Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt is favourite to capture the Overseas Sports Personality award at odds as low as 2/5. However bookmakers could be in for a shock with the shark Michel Phelps and Ireland golf hero Padraig Harrington in the running at 10/3 and 33/1 respectively.
