Who will be the next Chelsea manager?
By Clive Twyman
Published on 11 February 2009
The Chelsea boss Luis Felipe Scolari was sacked yesterday, after a string of bad results saw the Blues slip to fourth place in the Premiership.  The goalless home draw with Hull City at the weekend proved to be the nail in the coffin for the Brazilian.

There is already much speculation on who will be the successor to Scolari with bookmakers being quick to offer odds on who will be the next Chelsea manager.

The current favourite is Dutchman Guus Hiddink who is believed to already be in contact with Chelsea about taking over as manager.  Hiddink is currently the manager at Russia and has links with Chelsea’s Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich which have shortened the Dutchman’s odds.  At the moment you will get the best odds of 4/5* on Hiddink with Betfair.

Frank Rijkaard’s name was in the running as a possible Chelsea manager when Jose Mourinho was sacked and after Avram Grant left Stamford Bridge, therefore he is again seen as a strong contender.  Rijkaard is also out of a job after quitting his post at Barcelona at the end of last season. The former Dutch international is 31/5* with Betfair.

Avram Grant failed to win a trophy in his time as Chelsea manager but he still guided Chelsea to the Champions League Final and the runners-up spot in the Premiership.  He also had a better win ratio than Scolari, and it is for these reasons that the bookmakers regard Grant to be in with a chance of returning to his former job at Chelsea.  One bookmaker has him at 9/2* but you will currently get the best odds at 27/2* with Betfair on the Israeli.
Former England and Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson has also had his name linked in the press as a possible future Chelsea manager.  Eriksson is said to want to return to the Premiership and would really like to manage Chelsea.  He is currently in charge of the Mexican national side and his job there is believed to be insecure.  Eriksson is an 18/1* shot with Sportingbet.

Italian managers Roberto Mancini and Carlo Ancelotti are also in the running.  Mancini is 22/1* with Sportingbet and you will get a price of 25/1* on Ancelotti also with Sportingbet.

German national coach Joachim Low is an outside bet at 28/1* with Victor Chandler.

Bookmakers are also offering odds on Chelsea’s most successful manager Jose Mourinho making an emotional return to Stamford Bridge.  Chelsea fans would surely welcome the special one back as manager but it is unlikely due to Mourinho’s soured relationship with Roman Abramovich.  Betfair are giving odds of 54/1* on Mourinho.

It is a reflection of the lack of good English managers that the most fancied Englishman to get the Chelsea job is way down in the list of favourites.  Alan Curbishley is 33/1* with Sky Bet.  Mark Hughes is then the next most fancied British manager.  You will get odds of 199/1* on the Welshman taking charge.

Even though it’s not going to happen, Betfair are offering a price of 519/1* on Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger switching to Chelsea.

*odds are correct as of time of writing and are changing all the time.
