A new survey has discovered that more than one in ten men in the UK are gambling online. Market research companies YouGov together with Ipsos MORI interviewed 6,000 adults up and down the UK to determine how many of them participated in online gambling. The poll was undertaken by the market research companies for analyst firm Point Topic who have revealed the findings.
The results of the survey showed that almost 12 percent of the men questioned, gamble online. It also found that 6 percent of women also enjoy gambling online. Over 14 percent of people of both sexes asked who are aged in the 25 – 34 age bracket said they gamble online.
Point Topic have also stated that the worldwide online gambling market is currently worth around £5.1 billion each year. They say 22 million punters regularly go online to visit gambling websites.
John Bosnell, senior analyst at Point Topic commented that, “We estimate that the gaming sites earn £20 per player per month in the high income countries, which is fairly conservative, and around £5 per month per player from the low income territories.”
He goes on to say that 7 percent of internet users across the earth participate in online gambling, so there is still plenty of scope for the industry to continue to grow. However, he states that restrictions on online gambling in countries most noticeably the USA and China, is having a detrimental effect on the growth of online gambling.
The online gambling market has enjoyed tremendous growth and will continue to grow, but Bosnell warns with the current worldwide financial crisis, there will be many sites that will suffer. The fast paced growth of the industry will slow in the next year and he predicts insolvency and consolidation will be a feature of the industry in 2009.
