Odds for the Champions League
Published on 20 February 2009
The Champions League returns next week with the knockout stages getting going with 16 clubs taking part in the second round. The odds on who will win the tournament have changed a lot since the beginning of the season.
The current favourites with bookmakers are Barcelona. Will the Spanish club repeat their success of 2006? They are priced at 3/1* with Boylesports, Paddy Power, Sky Bet, Coral, Extrabet and Betfair to achieve this. To reach the Champions League Final, Barcelona are a 9/5* shot with Extrabet. Barcelona have French club Lyon to play in the second round.
Manchester United were second favourites at the start of the season and are still second favourites as the competition enters the knockout stages. You will get a price of 11/2* with Bet365, Paddy Power, Stan James, Coral and Extrabet on Manchester United retaining their European crown. To make it to the final, the red Devils are 3/1* with Sky Bet and Extrabet. They will though first have to get past FC Copenhagen, a game in which they are 31/21* favourites with Betfair and Betdaq to win. Their Danish opponents are priced at 28/13* with WBX to cause an upset and knockout the holders.
Chelsea were the favourites for the Champions League at the start of the season as things were looking up at Stamford Bridge with their new manager Luis Felipe Scolari. Fast forward to February though, now Scolari has been sacked and the team have slipped to fourth place in the Premiership. Chelsea are still seen as a big threat in this competition though and are currently third favourites to win the Champions League for the first time. WBX currently have the Blues at 43/5* to win the trophy whereas they are 18/5* with Extrabet to make it to the final.
Next in the betting are former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan side. They are 10/1* for European glory with William Hill and 5/1* with Extrabet to reach the final.
Liverpool who have a great record in the champions league are then the fifth favourites to win the Champions League with a good price of 12/1* with Bet365 and Paddy Power.
Of the pick of the rest, Bayern Munich are 14/1* with a number of bookmakers including 888Sport. Arsenal are then the next favourites at 16/1* with Bet365 and Ladbrokes. Real Madrid are 16/1* with Coral, with Juventus at 20/1* with a host of bookmakers including Coral and William Hill. Sporting Lisbon are the rank outsiders with odds of 125/1* with a number of bookmakers.
Ladbrokes are offering odds on it being an English final just like last year at 11/4*.
Lionel Messi is now the favourite to be the competition’s top goalscorer with a price of 18/5* with Betdaq. Miroslav Klose is 7/1* with Boylesports in the same betting market. Steven Gerrard of Liverpool is also 7/1* but this time with Bet365, Bluesquare, Sky Bet and 888Sport.
*Odds are correct as of time of writing.
