Murray is favourite with Ladbrokes to win Australian Open

The Australian Open tennis tournament begins on Monday at Melbourne Park in Melbourne and now might be time to have a bet on the outcomes of 2009’s first Grand Slam event, seeing as the odds are likely to shorten.

Britain’s Andy Murray is heavily fancied to become the first British winner of a Grand Slam event for many years.  He is second favourite with most bookmakers although at the present time Ladbrokes, Coral and Extrabet all have him as favourite with other bookmakers making him joint favourite with Roger Federer.

This is due to Murray’s recent victories over Roger Federer and Andy Roddick on his way to winning the Qatar ExxonMobil Open.  Murray is now ranked number four in the world and stands a good chance of winning a major Grand Slam event.  If you fancy backing the Scot you will currently get the best odds with Betfair and Betdaq at 3/1*.

Roger Federer is now number two in the world behind Rafael Nadal, but bookmakers favour him above Nadal in Melbourne due to his previous form at the event.  Federer is favourite with most bookmakers to secure his fourth Australian Open title and fourteenth Grand Slam win.  You will get a price of 11/4* with Ladbrokes, Coral and Extrabet on the Swiss player winning yet another Grand Slam event.

World number one Rafael Nadal is the third favourite.  The Spaniard is more used to clay courts and last year made the breakthrough on grass with his great win over Federer in the Wimbledon final.  Nadal is 9/2* with Betfair and Betdaq to win his first Grand Slam title on a hard court.

Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open last year and he is a 36/5* shot with Betfair and Betdaq to repeat his success.  The top four players are heavily fancied above the rest of the field.  David Nalbandian is 29/1* with Betdaq.  Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, last year’s runner-up is 47/1* and Juan Martin Del Potro is 49/1* also both with Betdaq.

The odds on it being a Nadal versus Federer final are 7/2* that it will happen and 1/6* that it won’t happen and the odds that their will be a new winner are 8/15*, with odds of 32/19* that their won’t be a new winner.  These odds are all with Betfair.

In the womens event, Venus Williams is 39/10* with Betfair to take the ladies Australian Open title.  Her younger sister Serena is 18/5* with Betdaq and Betfair.  For Jelena Jankovic to win, you will get odds of 41/5*.
*Odds are correct as of time of writing.
