Those who knock poker would do well to follow Julian Thew’s example and use it to make life a hell of a lot less stressful!
The Irish man fulfilled a major promise he made to his wife and two sons three years ago after winning the European Poker Tournament in Baden, Austria recently.
Thew, now based in Nottingham pledged to his family in 2004 that he would pay off his mortgage entirely before his 40th birthday.
By winning in Austria the Dubliner earned £470,000 and the mortgage is no more.
According to the Irish Post newspaper Thew said “It’s always nice when a plan comes together and I remembered making the promise when I sat at the final table in Austria and just hoped it would come off. But it was still an unbelievable feeling when I won and I was very emotional.”
Speaking after his victory Julian revealed that while he started playing poker in his teens it was only after he received a book on poker for a Christmas present that his interest was reinvigorated.
He said “My wife Amanda bought me a poker book one Christmas and everything started falling into place.”
Once he had decided to take poker seriously and enter major championships Thew attracted the financial backing of William Hill bookmakers.
While the prospects looked good on paper wife Amanda was wary that it was a dog-eat-dog profession and doubted whether the promise to pay off the mortgage in record time would ever materialise. However after the victory in Austria she concedes her husband knew exactly what he was doing.
She told the Irish Post “Obviously he has proved me wrong and it is wonderful that he has done so well. Now he’s not only paid the mortgage off, but we are thinking about buying a house back in Ireland where the family still lives.”
