Eastgate is the new World Series of Poker Champion

Denmark’s Peter Eastgate has won the richest prize in professional poker as he secured victory in the World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas. His reward was over £5.9 million and a WSOP gold bracelet - which every professional poker player wants to win - together with the prestige of the world title and his place in WSOP history.
Eastgate is the youngest player to win the World Series of Poker Main Event No Limit Hold’em Championship.
The final table was concluded on Sunday 10th November and Monday 11th November after the final 9 players won their right to fight it out in the final table after qualifying from a field of 6,844 players.
The final 9 were: Dennis Phillips, Ylon Schwarz, Scott Montgomery, Darius Suharto, Kim “Chino” Rheem, Craig Marquis, Ivan Demidov as well as Peter Eastgate.
At the beginning of play, Dennis Phillips was the chip leader but failed to make the heads-up –ensuring that this year’s champion came from outside the United States as he finished in third place, but was still rewarded with the huge sum of £2.9 million. He was the bookmakers’ favourite before the final table got underway.
Eastgate faced Ivan Demidov of Russia in the heads-up final which was to last 274 hands. At the beginning of the action Eastgate had an extremely tough task as he was more than 20 million chips behind Demidov.
Eastgate kept his cool to gradually chip away at Demidov’s lead. After a long battle which lasted 15 hours, Demidov went all-in with two pairs, however, Eastgate answered with a straight which meant it was all over.
Demidov has shown some great form recently as he also made it to the final table of the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event held in London back in September and has come very close to winning the big win. His prize money for his runners-up spot is over £3.8 million.
Here is how the final table finished:
• Peter Eastgate - $9,150,000 (£5.8 million)
• Ivan Demidov - $5,810,000 (£3.8 million
• Dennis Phillips - $4,515,000 (£2.9 million)
• Ylon Schwarz - $3,775,000 (£2.47 million)
