Closure of Huddersfield casino is sign of the times
By Graham Clifford
Published on 27 November 2008
Fears that the worldwide economic downturn is hitting land based gambling gathered pace this week after a new casino in the centre of Huddersfield closed after just two months in operation.

The impact of the casino’s closure has been felt throughout the West Yorkshire town with up to 100 jobs at risk unless a new investor can be found for the troubled casino in the next 30 days.

The closure of Casino Red on Northumberland Street is something of an embarrassment for the local authorities who had only just approved the casino a few months ago. The project cost £5 million and while the closure is said to be a "temporary" move its thought unlikely the doors of the casino will reopen again unless there are is a significant change of ownership.

Unless a new investor is found within 30 days the business will go under and the casino will close forever. It is not known if the company has any investors to speak to about the project but heavy running costs for off-line casinos have seen more and more companies hit troubled times. This is yet another example of the differing performances between off-line and online casinos where operating costs are so very different.
While online casino sites in the UK continue to thrive the same cannot be said for their land based cousins. Indeed websites are now offering such excellent value bonuses and attractive offers that’s its almost impossible for regular high street casinos to compete.

It will be interesting to see how the closure of the Huddersfield casino affects the government’s roll-out across the country with regard to new casino licences and the so-called "super" casinos. After years of waiting for the government to push through new legislation it looks highly likely that we will see yet more delays in the granting of further casino licences in the UK.
