Casinos fall silent as South Africans celebrate

You know when the roulette tables come to a halt in South Africa that something big is going on.

On Saturday night casinos such as the boardwalk in Port Elizabeth fell quite as punters downed their playing chips to roar on the Springboks as the side managed by Jake White went on to defeat under dogs England and capture the Rugby World Cup for the second time in their history.

Tables and slot machines went dormant as people sat on their chairs watching the game on the screens in an electric atmosphere.

The euphoria resonated at the Nangoza Jebe Centenary Hall in New Brighton in Port Elizabeth, where hundreds of fans both young and old sat side by side to watch the historic match on a big screen.
When Irish referee Allain Rolland put the whistle to his lips to blow for the end of the final a wave of celebrations flooded across South Africa.

While many celebrate winning the Rugby World Cup some will also be thinking about the next football world cup which will take place in South Africa in 2010.

In the midst of the celebrations one reveler suffered a tragic loss however.

South African police have confirmed that a woman lost her legs during the Rugby World Cup partying in Pretoria.

Spokesperson Inspector Paul Ramaloko said the woman, in her 20s, was injured when a car ran over her in Sunnyside on Saturday night after the Springboks won the world cup.

"A crowd took to the streets to celebrate the victory; there was car spinning and a woman was run over - the car cut off her legs," he said.

Another woman was also seriously injured during the celebrations.

The two women were part of the crowd that was dancing in the street when some motorists started to spin their cars.
