Casinos, Horses, Greyhounds – Liverpool area has it all

As European City of culture for 2008 Liverpool is attracting publicity on the International stage for all the right reasons. The beneficial spin-offs are already apparent with news this week that nearby Birkenhead is to get a new high-tech casino.

The proposal will see a hotel, restaurant and casino development built though it has to get clearance from local authorities initially.

Europa Plaza Developments have submitted plans for a 120-room hotel and casino on the Conway Street area.

The plans also include a three storey restaurant on currently derelict land.

Planning officers in Wirral have recommended the hotel though the Liverpool Echo reports that the approval of a casino may prove controversial as gaming did not form part of the authority’s development policy for the area.

The paper reports that the hotel would be on 1.35 hectares of land next to the Europa Pools and the VUE cinema.

The council's planning committee will consider the applications on Thursday, March 27th.

Gambling has always been big business in Liverpool and paintings depicting gamblers in centuries past hang in the city’s museums.

Today there are three main casinos in the city itself each boasting the highest of standards in terms of facilities and atmosphere. They are the Leo Casino on the Queens Dock, the Grosvenor Casino on West Derby road and the Mint Liverpool casino on Renshaw Street.

As well as the established casinos there’s always the nearby racetracks to tempt the eager gambler. Lying just miles from Liverpool city center punters can try their luck at Aintree, Chester or Haydock Park race tracks and also available is Ellesmere Post Greyhound Stadium.

As British cities go there are few to compare with the gambling facilities present in Liverpool. The key though is the variety of temptations available. It may be the European city of culture this year but when it comes to having a flutter Liverpool may simply be ‘the best of British’.
