Joao Barbosa, from Portugal, has won the Main Event at the PokerStars.com EPT Warsaw; otherwise known as the Polish Open. It is his first EPT title and by doing so has won 367,141 euro in prize money in the process.
A total of 217 poker players including 48 online qualifiers made up the field in the No Limit Hold’em event held in the casino at the Hyatt Regency in the Polish capital. Nine players progressed to the final table with Barbosa being joined by Team PokerStars professionals Dario Minieri and Arnaud Mattern together with Nico Behling, Andrea Benelli, Atanas Gueorguiev, Ludovic Lacay, Michael Muheim and Sergey Schcherbatskiy. Mattern and Sccherbatskiy had done well and taken the long route by qualifying online and progressing through the event all the way to the final table.
Barbosa started the final table in 5th position but kept in the game to eventually take the title. On his way to victory, Barbosa knocked out the two qualifiers one after the other – sending home Sergey Scherbatsky in sixth and ensuring that Arnaud mattern didn’t make it to the final four.
In the heads-up battle, Barbosa faced the German Nico Behling. This encounter was long - lasting over three hours before Barbosa sealed the title. Behling’s runners-up prize was 205,270 euro.
This was only the fifth EPT event that Barbosa had played in and it was a double celebration for the Portuguese player as the former computer engineering student was also celebrating his 26th birthday.
Here’s how the final table ended with their prize money converted from euro into pounds:
Joao Barbosa – 367,140 euro (£311,779)
Nico Behling – 205,270 euro (£174,321)
