Aussie Shane dumps cricket for poker
By Graham Clifford
Published on 10 January 2008
He’s arguably the most famous ever Cricket player to don the white but now Shane Warne has admitted that he’s potty about poker.

The 38 year old bowler will be taking part in a poker tournament in Las Vegas but in doing so misses out on a vital Twenty20 Cup game for his English county side Hampshire.

Explaining his decision Warne said this week “"Now that I am retired from international cricket - in fact all cricket in Australia - I am gradually moving into other areas. There is a deal in the pipeline with a poker company that will involve playing in certain events through the year. I can fit what I do around the cricket.

"The World Series takes place in Las Vegas at the same time as the Twenty20 Cup. I definitely want to go to Las Vegas and I have not played Twenty20 for the past few seasons. It has always come at an ideal time to take a break. I am 38 and, after 20 or so years in the game, I need a rest at some point during a six-month campaign.”

Warne retired from international cricket 12 months ago after guiding Australia to a comprehensive 5-0 drubbing of England to reclaim the Ashes trophy.

A dramatic figure on the field of play and off it the Victoria man has a string of records to his name.

In March 2004, Warne became the second cricketer after Courtney Walsh of the West Indies to take 500 Test wickets. He broke the record for most career wickets in Test cricket in October of the same year during the Second Test against India. He also became the first bowler in history to take 600 Test wickets. In 2005, Warne also broke the record for the number of wickets in a calendar year, with 96 wickets.
