A Murray win in US Open would earn a mint for Brits

Shrewd British punters are on the verge of a major pay day after young Scot Andy Murray progressed to tonight’s final of the US Open where he face the mighty Roger Federer.

Bookmakers say hundreds of thousands of pounds were placed on Murray to win the Grand Slam. He was 20/1 with many to go all the way at Flushing Meadows, New York.

Last night the determined Murray saw off World number One Rafael Nadal in four sets to set up an intriguing final.

Murray was 7/2 to beat Nadal and fans of the top ranked British player will be making their way to bookmakers across the land today to cash in on their wise punt while others who backed him online are already planning how they’re to spend their windfall.

The last few weeks has shown a different side to Andy Murray, a massive improvement in his stamina and ability to fight back in games together with a growing confidence in his own ability. He recently moved to a new coaching set-up and it seems to be doing wonders but is the US Open Final a bridge too far?

Murray aims to become the first British man since 1936 to win a Grand Slam singles title and the 21 year old is, as you would expect, confident he can succeed where countless others failed.

Looking ahead to the final and a match up against the brilliant Federer he said “He's probably the greatest player ever. To get a chance to play him in a Grand Slam final is an honour. I've played well against him in the past. I think a Slam final is different to the match that I played against him before. He's obviously won over 30 matches in a row here so he's going to be feeling confident going in. He's got loads of experience in these situations and it's something new for me. I know I'm going to have to play great to have a chance of winning, but I've played well the last couple of weeks.”
